position.Art initially did not want to sing lead vocal, feeling it was not right for him.

have taken turns singing alternate verses of the vocal.

The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
The song in the #256 position is a twelve-bar blues song written by Jerry Leiber
and Mike Stoller and originally recorded by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton in 1952 (see the song at position #4382).Other early versions illustrate the differences among blues, country and rock and roll in the mid 1950s.The 1956 remake by the king of rock & roll is the best known version. The king of rock & roll's first, apparently not very successful, appearance in Las Vegas, as an "extra added attraction",was in the Venus Room of the New Frontier from April 23 through May 6,1956.Freddie Bell and the Bellboys were the hot act in town, and the king of rock & roll went to the "Sands" to take in their show. The king of rock & roll not only enjoyed the show, but also loved their reworking of the song in the #256 position and asked Freddie if he had any objections to him recording his own version.By May 16 the king of rock & roll had added the song in the #256 position to his live performances. The song was done as comic relief, and the king of rock & roll based the lyrics, which he sometimes changed, and "gyrations" on what he had seen at the "Sands".The song always got a big reaction and became the standard closer.Drummer D.J. Fontana put it this way."We took that from a band we saw in Vegas,Freddie Bell and the Bellboys. They were doing the song kinda like that.We went out there every night to watch them. He'd say: "Let's go watch that band. It's a good band! That's where he heard the song in the #256 position, and shortly thereafter he said:"Let's try that song". The king of rock & roll first performed the song in the #256 position to a nation wide television audience on The Milton Berle Show on June 5,1956,his second appearance with Berle.By this time Scotty Moore had added a guitar solo, and DJ Fontana had added a hot drum roll between verses to the song. The king of rock & roll appeared for the first time on national television without a guitar. Before his death,Berle told an interviewer that he had told the king of rock & roll to leave his guitar backstage."Let 'em see you, son", advised Uncle Miltie. An upbeat version ended abruptly as The king of rock & roll threw his arm back. Then began to vamp at half tempo,"You ain't-a nuthin' but a ...,cuh-crying all the time." "You ain't never caught a rabbit..." A final wave signaled the band to stop. The king of rock & roll pointed threateningly at the audience, and belted out,"You ain't no friend of mine."The king of rock & roll's movements during the performance were energetic and exaggerated. The reactions of young women in the studio audience were enthusiastic,as shown on the broadcast.Over 40,000,000 people saw the performance and the next day controversy exploded.Berle's network received many letters of protest. The various self appointed guardians of public morality attacked The king of rock & roll in the press.TV critics began a merciless campaign against the king of rock & roll making statements that; he had a "caterwalling voice and nonsense lyrics",he was an "influence on juvenile deliquency", and began using the nickname "Elvis the Pelvis".The king of rock & roll next appeared on national television singing the song in the #256 position on the July 1 Steve Allen Show.Steve Allen wrote:"When I booked The king of rock & roll,I naturally had no interest in just presenting him vaudeville-style and letting him do his spot as he might in concert. Instead we worked him into the comedy fabric of our program...We certainly didn't inhibit the king of rock & roll then-notorious pelvic gyrations, but I think the fact that he had on formal evening attire made him, purely on his own, slightly alter his presentation."As Allen was notoriously contemptuous of rock 'n' roll music and songs such as the song in the #256 position,he smirkingly presented the king of rock & roll" with a roll that looks exactly like a large roll of toilet paper with, says Allen, the 'signatures of eight thousand fans' "and the singer had to wear a tuxedo while singing an abbreviated version of the song in the #256 position to an actual top hat-wearing basset hound.Although by most accounts The king of rock & roll was a good sport about it,according to Scotty Moore, the next morning they were all angry about their treatment the previous night.
The morning after the "Steve Allen Show" performance, the studio version was
recorded for RCA Victor by the king of rock & roll's regular band of Scotty Moore
on lead guitar (with The king of rock & roll usually providing rhythm guitar),Bill
Black on bass, D.J. Fontana on drums and backing vocals from the Jordanaires. The
king of rock & roll recorded this version along with "Don't Be Cruel" and "Any
Way You Want Me" on July 2, 1956 at RCA's New York City studio. The producing
credit was given to RCA's Steve Sholes, however the studio recordings reveal that
the king of rock & roll produced the songs (as well as most of the RCA recording
sessions) himself, which is verified by the band members. The king of rock & roll
insisted on getting the song exactly the way he wanted it,recording 31 takes of
the song.Don't Be Cruel (G2WW-5936) was the flip side of the the song in the #256
position single (G2WW-5935),released on July 13,1956.Both sides of the record
topped the charts independently,a rare feat. The single also topped all three
extant Billboard charts:pop, country & western and rhythm & blues the first record
in history to do so.
On September 9,1956 with the song topping the US charts, the king of rock & roll
performed an abbreviated version of The song in the #256 position on the Ed
Sullivan Show hosted by Charles Laughton. After performing "Ready Teddy", he
introduced the song with the following statement,"Friends, as a great philosopher
once said..." The king of rock & roll's first time on the Sullivan show was an
event that drew some 60 million TV viewers. During his second Sullivan Show
appearance on October 28,1956 he introduced the song thusly (although unable to
keep a straight face). "Ladies and gentlemen, could I have your attention please.
Ah, I'd like to tell you we're going to do a sad song for you. This song here is
one of the saddest songs we've ever heard. It really tells a story friends.
Beautiful lyrics. It goes something like this." He then launched into a full version of the song. The king of rock & roll was shown in full during this performance. Again, the king of rock & roll drew more than 60 million viewers.
The song in the #256 position sold over 4 million copies in the United States
on its first release. It was the king of rock & roll's best selling single and
starting in July 1956,it spent a record eleven weeks at #1.It stayed in the
#1 spot until it was replaced by "Love Me Tender",also recorded by the king of
rock & roll.
In March, 2005, Q magazine (UK) placed the song in the #256 position on this
list at number 55 in its list of the Q Magazine's 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks.
Rolling Stone magazine ranked it #19 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of
All Time-the highest ranked of the king of rock & roll's eleven entries. The song
in the #256 position was also recorded by 5 country singers in 1953 alone, and
over 26 times through 1964.From the 1970s onward, the song has appeared,or is
heard,as a part of the soundtrack in numerous motion pictures, most notably in
blockbusters such as "American Graffiti", "Grease","Forrest Gump","Lilo & Stitch",
"A Few Good Men" (film) and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull".

The song at position #254 is just phenomenal. It is one of the biggest selling
singles of all-time in the UK. In 2002 according to
"www.hart87,freeserve.co.uk/top100.html" which ranked by sales all the songs on
the UK singles charts from 1952-2002,ranked at #2 the song that is at position
254.The song they ranked at #1 is yet to come in the Top 6500. And the song at
position #91 on this list ripped off of the song at position #254.
The song at position #254 was written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in 1984 to
raise money for relief of the 1984-1985 famine in Ethiopia.
The song at position #249 is a song that kicks ass. The song is by a recording
act who was born on April 22nd,1950 in Beckenham,Kent,England. The song at position

Cash Box (US) and Billboard (US) Magazine.
The song at position #249 was recorded recorded live on November 22,1975 at the
State University of New York's Plattsburgh Memorial Hall. The song is also featured
in the popular rhythm game,Guitar Hero 5.
The song was written in the early seventies with members of the singer of the
song at position #249's band, then called "Frampton's Camel".The song was
originally about waking up with a hangover with the opening lyrics being
"Well, woke up this morning with a wine glass in my hand".The song at position
#249 is considerably longer (over fourteen minutes on Frampton Comes Alive!) and
features a number of instrumental solos. Most famously, the singer of the song at
position #249 used the talk box,an effects pedal which redirects a guitar's sound
through a tube into the performer's mouth, allowing the guitar to mimic human speech.
The title of the song is "Do You Feel Like We Do",although the lyrics read
"Do you feel like I do?".Only after the keyboard solo in the Frampton Comes
Alive! version does Frampton sing "Do You Feel Like We Do." He then sings "Do You
Feel Like We Do" through the talk box in the midst of his extended talk box
guitar solo.
This rock group from Belfast,Northern Ireland holds the #239 position. The song at position #239 was the #5 song for the entire year of 2006 on Canada's digital

Lead singer,of the group who holds the #239 position,Gary Lightbody wrote the
song, sober after a binge of white wine,in the garden of producer Jacknife Lee's
Kent cottage. The song has "Lightbody" singing a plain melody over sparse guitars,
which has an ever-building crescendo. He stated it was his "purest love song".The phrase "Chasing Cars" came from Lightbody's father,in reference to a girl Lightbody was infatuated with,"You're like a dog chasing a car. You'll never catch it and you just wouldn't know what to do with it if you did."
The song was first heard on the band's 2005 "Final Straw Tour",when they
began playing it,along with two other newly written songs ("Your Halo" and "It's
Beginning to Get to Me") they had intended to release on their upcoming album.
Since then, the composition of the song was changed slightly, and most of the lyrics
were rewritten.
The song at position #239 became very popular in the USA when it was played during an episode on the TV show "Grey's Anatomy".

The song in the #236 position was the #1 song for the entire year of 1977 in both

The song in the #234 position,by this performer who was born on May 14th,1936 in the Borough of the Bronx in New York City, spent fourteen (14) weeks in the #1
position on Radio Station WMGM from New York City. No other song stayed in the #1
position for a longer period of time on WMGM.The song also spent nine (9) weeks at
the #1 spot on Billboard (US) Magazine's Singles Chart and no song between 1956
and 1976 stayed in the #1 position for a longer period on Billboard's Singles
Chart. The song in the #148 position was both Radio Station WINS (from New York
City) and Cash Box Magazine's #1 single for the entire year of 1959.Further,Radio
station WCBS-FM from New York City ranked this song as the #1 song of the
millennium.
The song in the #234 position was originally known as "Die Moritat von Mackie
Messer".It was composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht for their
music drama "Die Dreigroschenoper",or, as it is known in English,"The Threepenny
Opera". It premiered in Berlin in 1928. The song has become a popular standard.
A moritat (from mori meaning "deadly" and tat meaning "deed") is a medieval
version of the murder ballad performed by strolling minstrels In The Threepenny
Opera, the moritat singer with his street organ introduces and closes the drama
with the tale of the deadly Mackie Messer,a character based on the dashing
highwayman Macheath in John Gay's The Beggar's Opera. The Brecht-Weill version of
the character was far more cruel and sinister, and has been transformed into a
modern anti-hero.The play opens with the moritat singer comparing Macheath
(unfavorably) with a shark, and then telling tales of his robberies, murders, rapes
and arson.

This Seattle grunge band holds down the #233 position with another phenomenal
song. In 1999 Q-Magazine in the UK ranked this song (from a poll) as the #1 song
of all-time.Also radio station JJJ (Australia) ranked this song as the #1 song for
the entire year of 1991 and in the year 2000 JJJ ranked the song as the #1 song of
all-time. The song at position #233 is off the album titled "Nevermind" which was
the album that Billboard Magazine ranked as the #3 album for the entire year of
1992. In addition in 2002 Rolling Stone Magazine (US) ranked the album "Nevermind"
as the second (2nd) biggest album of all-time.
The song in the #233 position was Written by Kurt Cobain,Krist Novoselic and
Dave Grohl and produced by Butch Vig,the song uses a verse-chorus form where the
main four-chord riff is used during the intro and chorus to create an alternating
loud and quiet dynamic.
In a January 1994 Rolling Stone interview, the group that sings the song at
position #233's frontman Kurt Cobain revealed that the song in the #233 position
was an attempt to write a song in the style of the "Pixies",a band he greatly
admired. He explained:
"I was trying to write the ultimate pop song.I was basically trying to rip off
the Pixies.I have to admit it.When I heard the Pixies for the first time,I
connected with that band so heavily that I should have been in that band-or at
least a Pixies cover band.We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and
then loud and hard."
Cobain did not begin to write The song in the #233 position until a few weeks
before recording started on the group's second album,"Nevermind",in 1991.When he
first presented the song to his bandmates,it comprised just the main riff and the
chorus vocal melody, which bassist Krist Novoselic dismissed at the time as
"ridiculous."In response,Cobain made the band play the riff for "an hour and a
half."In a 2001 interview,Novoselic recalled that after playing the riff
repeatedly, he thought,"'Wait a minute. Why don't we just kind of slow this down a
bit?" So I started playing the verse part. And Dave (started) playing a drum beat.
"As a result,it is the only song on Nevermind to credit all three band members as
authors.
Cobain came up with the song's title when his friend Kathleen Hanna,at the
time the lead singer of the Riot Grrrl punk band "Bikini Kill",spray painted
"Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his wall.Since they had been discussing
anarchism, punk rock, and similar topics,Cobain interpreted the slogan as having a
revolutionary meaning. What Hanna actually meant, however, was that Cobain smelled
like the deodorant "Teen Spirit",which his then-girlfriend Tobi Vail wore.
Cobain later claimed that he was unaware that it was a brand of deodorant until
months after the single was released.
The song in the #233 position received many critical plaudits, including
topping the "Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics' poll and winning two MTV Video
Music Awards for its music video, which was in heavy rotation on music television.
The song was dubbed an "anthem for apathetic kids" of Generation X,but the band
grew uncomfortable with the success and attention it received as a result. In the
years since Cobain's death, listeners and critics have continued to praise the song
in the #233 position as one of the greatest rock songs of all time.

The song at position #230 spent three (3) weeks in the #1 position in Canada,
four (4) weeks at #1 in the USA (Cash Box Magazine),five (5)weeks at #1 in the UK,
six (6) weeks at #1 on radio station CHUM from Toronto & eight (8) weeks at #1 in Australia. The song at position #230 was the third (3rd) biggest song for the entire year of 1965 in both the UK and Australia, the #5 song for the entire year of 1966 in the USA (both Cash Box and Billboard Magazine). The performance of the song at position #230 on the Canadian and CHUM charts (because of the amount of points the song received for attaining these positions) is the primary reasons why this song ranks so high on this chart. For the entire year of 1966 the song at position #230 was the #2 song in Canada and the #1 song on Radio Station CHUM from Toronto,Ontario,Canada..In addition the British website
www.hart87,freeserve.co.uk/top100.html which was ranking the 100 best songs in the
UK between 1952-2002 ranked this song as the 32nd best song between 1952 and 2002.
Paul of the fab four wrote the words to the song at position #230 and music to
the verses and the chorus, with lyrics that "might have been personal" and thus a
reference to his relationship with Jane Asher.Paul of the fab four then took the
song to John of the fab four: "I took it to John to finish it off and we wrote the
middle together."According to John of the fab four,he "did the middle eight."
With its intimations of mortality,John of the fab four's contribution to the
twelve-bar bridge contrasts typically with what John of the fab four saw as
Paul's cajoling optimism. As John of the fab four told Playboy in 1980, "You've got
Paul of the fab four writing, 'We can work it out / We can work it out'"real
optimistic, y'know, and me, impatient: 'Life is very short, and there's no
time/For fussing and fighting,my friend.'"Based on those comments,some critics
overemphasized Paul of the fab four's optimism, neglecting the toughness in
passages written by Paul, such as "Do I have to keep on talking untilI can't go on?".
Lennon's middle shifts focus from Paul of the fab four's concrete reality to a
philosophical perspective in B minor, illustrating this with a waltz-time section suggested by George of the fab four that leads back to the verse, possibly meant to suggest tiresome struggle. Music critic Ian MacDonald said,"[John of the fab four's] passages are so suited to his Salvation Army harmonium that it's hard to imagine them not being composed on it.The swell-pedal crescendos he adds to the verses are,on the other hand, textural washes added in the studio, the first of their kind on a fab four record and signposts to the enriched sound-palette of Revolver."Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher described the song as the song that defines The fab four.

The recording act who sings the song at position #228 is from Orange County,
California and the song stayed at #1 for sixteen (16) weeks on the Airplay Chart
on Billboard (US) Magazine and was the #1 song for the entire year of 1997 on
Billboard Magazine's (US) year-end airplay chart and was Radio And Records (US)
Magazine's #1 song for the entire year of 1997. The song at #228 was also the #7
single for the entire year of 1997 in both Australia & the UK. This song is from
the album "Tragic Kingdom" which was Billboard Magazine's #2 album for the entire
year of 1997.The song at position #228 was released as the third single from the band's second album "Tragic Kingdom" in 1996.The song is presumed to be about the break up of Gwen Stefani's seven-year relationship with group bassist Tony Kanal.
Despite the song's popularity, the song at position #228 did not chart on the
Billboard Hot 100 (as rules of the times required commercial singles for charting
and one was not issued for the song),but it reached number one in the UK, Sweden,
Netherlands, Switzerland,Norway New Zealand and Australia. It also reached #2 in
Austria. The song at position #228 is arguably the group's biggest hit and was
nominated for the "Song of the Year" and "Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group
With Vocal" at the Grammy Awards of 1998.

The song in the #227 position is by a recording act who was born Reginald
Kenneth Dwight on March 25th,1947 in Pinner,Middlesex,England. In the USA only the
Beatles and Elvis Presley have been more successful than the recording act at
position #227 as far as charting on the singles chart is concerned. The song in
the #227 position was never released as a single. But as I previously stated this
list is compiled by computing information from both single and album charts. The
song at position #227 was off the album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" which was both
Billboard (US) and Cash Box (US) Magazine's #1 album for the entire year of 1973.
And the song at position #227 received the highest score of any song off that
album by primarily receiving points from the positions that it placed on all-time
charts from various rock stations.
The song in the #227 position is the opening song on the double album
"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".The first part of the song,"Funeral for a Friend",is
an instrumental created by the singer of the song in the #227 position while
thinking of what kind of music he would like at his funeral. This first half segues
into "Love Lies Bleeding." In the Eagle Vision documentary,"Classic Albums:Goodbye
Yellow Brick Road", the singer of the song in the #227 position said the two songs
weren't written as one piece, but fit together since "Funeral For A Friend" ends in
the key of A,and "Love Lies Bleeding" opens in A,and the two were played as one
elongated piece when recorded. The grandiose,fugue-style introduction to "Funeral
For A Friend" was performed on A.R.P. synthesizer by the album's engineer,David
Hentschel, who the singer of the song in the #159 position recalled overdubbed
track after track of music and synthetic atmospheric effects until the mini-opus
was complete.
The song in the #227 position was too long for a single release, but got plenty
of airplay on FM stations that were predisposed toward rock epics. The whole piece
together is just over eleven minutes long.
The song at position #226 was by a recording act who was born on February
11th,1940 in Sommerville,Massacusetts. The song at position #138 got as high as it
did on this list primarily because of two succesful appearances on the singles
charts in the US & Canada. On October 20th,1962 the song at position #226 began a
two week run (during Halloween) at the #1 position on Billboard (US) Magazine's
singles chart and on the same day began a three (3) week run at #1 on the Cash Box
Magazine's singles chart. The song was re-released eleven (11) years later in the
USA and on both magazines the song reached the Top 10. However,in Canada the song
was even more successful. On October 15th,1962 the song at position #226 went to
#1 for a week in Canada then again for three (3)more weeks on August 4th,1973.
The song managed to spend seven (7) weeks at #1 in Australia beginning on
October 11th,1973. In Canada the song at position #226 was the #8 song for the
entire year of 1973 and in Australia it was the second (2nd) biggest song for the
entire year of 1973.
The singer of The song at position #226 was an aspiring actor who sang with a
band called The Cordials at night while going to auditions during the day.One night,
while performing with his band, the singer of The song at position #226 did a
monologue in imitation of horror movie actor Boris Karloff while performing The
Diamonds',"Little Darlin'".The audience loved it and fellow band member Lenny
Capizzi encouraged the singer of The song at position #226 to do more with the
Karloff imitation.
The singer of The song at position #226 and Capizzi composed The song at
position #138 and recorded it with Gary S. Paxton,Leon Russell,Johnny McCrae,
Rickie Page and Terry Berg, credited as "The Crypt-Kickers".The song was partially
inspired by Paxton's earlier novelty hit "Alley Oop",as well as by the
Mashed Potato dance craze of the era.A variation on the Mashed Potato was danced
to the song at position #226,in which the footwork was the same but monster gestures
were made with the arms and hands.Mel Taylor, drummer for "The Ventures" claimed to
play on this, and that fact is repeated many places, including Taylor's "N.Y. Times"
obituary.
The song at position #226 is narrated by a mad scientist whose monster, late one
evening, rises from a slab to perform a new dance. The dance becomes "the hit of the
land" when the scientist throws a party for other monsters. The producers came up
with several low-budget but effective sound effects for the recording. For example,
the sound of a coffin opening was imitated by a rusty nail being pulled out of a
board. The sound of a cauldron bubbling was actually water being bubbled through a
straw, and the chains rattling were simply chains being dropped on a tile floor. The
singer of The song at position #226 also impersonated horror film actor Bela
Lugosi as Dracula with the lyric "Whatever happened to my Transylvania Twist?"
The song in the #224 position was written during the collapse of Sting's

According to the Back to Mono box-set book, the song in the #224 position is said

the time he and his then wife divorced),about the obsession with the lost lover,

to be influenced by a Gene Pitney song titled "Every Breath I Take". The song is
composed in Classical rondo form with its ABACABA structure. The lyrics are very
similar to the opening lines of a short story by science fiction author
Judith Merrill titled "Whoever You Are".The chorus appears to borrow heavily from
the Leo Sayer track, "More Than I Can Say", recorded a couple of years before. The
lyrics "Every breath I take, every move I make" appear in the song "D'yer Mak'er"
by Led Zeppelin, recorded ten years earlier or Group with Vocal" at the Grammy Awards
of 1984 for the song in the #224 position.
The song ranked #224 on the 2004 Rolling Stone Magazine list of the 500 Greatest

The song at position #222 is by the king of Rock & Roll. The song at position
#222 spent seven (7) weeks in the #1 position on the Billboard (US) Magazine's
singles chart.Billboard (US) Magazine ranked this song as the #1 song for the
entire year of 1956 and was ranked as the #7 song for the entire year of 1956 in

song between 1955 and 1975. In 1999 Q-Magazine in the UK ranked this song as the
49th best song of all-time.
Inspired by the suicide of a young man who left a note with the line,"I walk a
lonely street",songwriters Tommy Durden,then a steel-guitarist in "Smiling Jack
Herring and his Swing Billies",and Mae Boren Axton,a teacher inJacksonville,
Florida, wrote the song at position #134 in thirty minutes in 1955.She was Hoyt
Axton's mother, and also a publicist for Hank Snow whose manager,Colonel
Tom Parker, would later also manage Presley.
So sure that the song would be a hit,Axton presented it to the king of rock &
roll's then manager,Bob Neal, and insisted it would be his first million-seller.
On November 10,1955,upon hearing the demo for the first time, the king of
rock & roll agreed and promised to record the song.Axton offered the king of
rock & roll a third of the royalties if he made the song his first single release
from his new label,RCA.The king of rock & roll first performed the song in Swifton,
Arkansas on December 9,1955 and declared it his "first hit".

This was the first of six versions of the song that can be associated to Los Del Rio.Another version,a new flamenco rumba pop fusion theme with fully Spanish lyrics, attained significant success in Spain and Mexico. It also became popular in Puerto Rico because of its use as an unofficial campaign theme song for then-governor Pedro Rossell",who was seeking reelection under the New Progressive Party of Puerto Rico's ticket.Being the base for many cruise ships, many visitors to the island were constantly exposed to the song during their stay in Puerto Rico. This may explain how the song spread to "and became a smash hit in" cities with sizable Latino communities in the United States, particularly Miami and New York City. After being remixed by the Bayside Boys and having English lyrics written and added by Grammy nominated producer Carlos de Yarza,it became a worldwide hit in mid-1996.During its heyday, the song was played frequently at professional athletic games, rallies, conventions and other places. In 1996, many believe a world record for group dancing was set, when a crowd of 50,000 people danced the Macarena in Yankee Stadium in New York City. The song made such an impact that during the Democratic National Convention in 1996,Al Gore humorously performed his version of the song in the #218 position by standing completely still while the song played. The song in the #218 position remained popular through 1996,but by the end of 1997,its popularity had diminished greatly. The song also broke records at the time by remaining in the Hot 100 chart for 60 weeks. The Bayside Boys remix includes a sample from Yazoo (also known in the United States as Yaz)track Situation-the laughter of Yazoo vocalist "Alison Moyet".

position #88 is slightly different from the title of the Roberta Flack version. This
version sampled the 1990 song "Bonita Applebum" by A Tribe Called Quest from their
debut album "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm". ATCQ themselves
had sampled the riff from the song "Memory Band" found on the self-titled album of
a little-known 1960s psychedelic soul Chicago band called "Rotary Connection".The
group who sings the song at position #174's single was so successful that the track
was 'deleted' and thus no longer supplied to retailers whilst the track was still
in the Top 20 so that attention could be drawn to the next single 'Ready or Not'.
Propelled by the success of the this track, the version by Flack was remixed in 1996
and topped the Hot Dance Club Play chart. In 2008,the song at #174 on this list was

rock & roll heard Martin's recording and put to tape a private version of the song.

the song at position #152.The midtempo song expresses how simply telephoning
someone to tell them you love them can make even a very unremarkable day rewarding.
It is one of the singer's most simplistic and sentimental songs, and with its
quintessentially mid-1980s synthesizers and drum machines is very different from
his more organic and experimental 1970s music. For those reasons it was deprecated
by critics. However,it was one of the singer's most commercially successful singles
to date.On June 27, 2009, two days after the death of his friend Michael Jackson,he
was at a public event and changed the words to the song so that it said:'Michael
knows,I'm here, and I love you'.While singing, his voice cracked several times and
at the end of the song he pointed to the sky and quietly said 'We love you Michael'...
