Hello people,
it was on Monday,May 4th,1970 when students at Kent State University in Ohio were protesting US President Richard Nixon expanding the Vietnam war by bombing Cambodia. With no weapons and only their voices to defend themselves, the US military (national guard) came out and shot four (4) college students to death.
There was a significant national response to the shootings: hundreds of universities, colleges, and high schools closed throughout the United States due to a student strike of four million students, and the event further affected public opinion,at an already socially contentious time, over the role of the United States
in the Vietnam War.
Also in response to the Kent State Massacre.Five days later a song by the Winnipeg,Canadian rock band the "Guess Who" entered the number one position on the US Billboard Hot 100 where it would remain for three (3) weeks. The song contained such emotive lyrics as:
American woman gonna mess your mind
American woman, she gonna mess your mind
Mm, American woman gonna mess your mind
Mm, American woman gonna mess your mind
.........................................
Don't come a-hangin' around my door
Don't wanna see your face no more
I don't need your war machines
I don't need your ghetto scenes
Colored lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes
Now woman,get away from me
