Note: as of August 1st, the infamous American Federation of Musicians' strike
against the recording industry effectively put a stop to a new U.S.-made
recordings featuring "musical instruments" (ukeleles, harmonicas, etc. were
OK). By early 1943, after the existing unreleased recordings had been issued,
companies interested in presenting fresh versions of newly-popular (or
newly-revived) songs were forced either to record vocal-only (acapella)
versions or to find past recordings to reissue. Though the bands were already
decimated by the draft, there are many who believe that this union action was a
major factor in the demise of the "big band era" as it had existed until that
time.

As two of the three major companies...Victor and Columbia...did not settle
until late 1944, the other labels who came to terms in September 1943, most
notably Decca and the new Capitol, were able to place a much larger and more
varied selection of 78s into the stores and dominated the sales charts for over
a year.

Pointing out the effect of the strike on the Billboard charts, you'll note that
in the listings that cover this period (generally 1943 & 1944), a number of
titles are marked "acapella" and others are noted to have been recorded in years
previous to their (eventual) popularity.

Yes...there was another "musicians' strike" for a large chunk of 1948, too.
That time, however, all of the record companies knew what to expect and (in the
words of a Jon and Sondra Steele song recorded in late 1947) "The All Recorded
To Beat The Ban."
